The UPF Institute for Applied Linguistics, IULA was created in 1994 and is a research and research-training centre that actually consists of about 70 researchers. IULA members are UPF professors of the Department of Translation and Language Sciences, the Department of Information Technologies and the Department of Communication, 14 PhD research scholarship holders and 16 assistant researchers contracted for specific externally funded projects, in addition to UPF funded support staff. DTCL and IULA jointly organize the Mención-de-Calidad awarded PhD program "Comunicació lingüística i mediació multilingüe", with a significantly international student population.
The group Tecnologies dels Recursos Lingüístics, TRL (Language Resource Techologies), a member of IULATERM unit led by prof. Núria Bel, works in the creation, development and application of technologies related to the acquisition, production, formalization, management, validation and evaluation of language resources as required for Language Technologies, Natural Language Processing and Computational Linguistics.
